“Smart” does not necessarily mean “needs Wi-Fi.” Some leak sensors can work locally, some need a hub, and some are heavily dependent on an internet connection. The distinction matters when the thing you are protecting is most vulnerable at 2 a.m.

There are three different failure scenarios

People often lump these together, but they are different:

  1. Your Wi-Fi network is down.
  2. Your internet connection is down.
  3. The power is out.

A sensor can survive one and fail another. For example, a local Zigbee or Z-Wave system may continue talking inside your house during an internet outage, while a cloud notification obviously cannot leave the house until the internet returns.

A local alarm is your last line of defense

If a sensor has a loud built-in alarm, it can still make itself useful when the router is unplugged. That is one reason I would not buy a leak sensor based on app features alone.

For a simple room, a local alarm plus a phone notification is a nice combination. If you need something for a remote property, look more carefully at the system's power and communications path.

What happens during an internet outage?

It depends on the architecture. A sensor that talks to a local hub can often continue recording or triggering local automations even if the internet is unavailable. A cloud-dependent sensor may still detect the water locally, but its remote notification may not arrive until connectivity returns.

Home Assistant is a good example of the local-first approach: its moisture triggers can run inside the home and can operate a connected valve as part of an automation. Home Assistant's moisture trigger documentation shows this explicitly.

Power outages are a different problem

No networking technology can make a dead sensor useful. If flood protection matters during storms or outages, think about the power chain: router, hub, water shutoff, sump pump, and the sensor itself.

A UPS for networking equipment can be useful, but it does not replace a backup sump system or generator where those are needed. Flood prevention is a stack of defenses, not one gadget.

How I would build a resilient setup

That final test is the part people skip. If you want to know what your system does during an outage, create the outage yourself for five minutes and find out.

FAQ

Can a water leak detector work without internet?

Some can detect water and sound a local alarm without internet. Whether you still receive phone alerts or can trigger a remote service depends on the device and architecture.

Will a Wi-Fi leak sensor work if Wi-Fi is down?

Usually not for network-based notifications. A local alarm may still work, but exact behavior varies by device.

Do Zigbee leak sensors need internet?

The Zigbee radio itself does not require the internet. Internet may still be needed for remote notifications or cloud features depending on the hub and software.
