Five spots cover most of the risk in a typical RV: the water pump compartment, the water heater, under every sink (kitchen and bathroom), the toilet or black tank connection, and the exterior shore-water inlet. Place a sensor at each of these and you've covered the areas where RV plumbing actually fails. Larger rigs with a washing machine or ice maker should add sensors near those appliances too.
It's tempting to buy a ten-pack and scatter sensors wherever there's room. That's not the most effective approach. A single sensor placed directly at a genuine risk point — where a fitting could actually fail — does more than three sensors placed randomly around the RV. Fittings here loosen from the constant vibration of road travel in a way that's uncommon in a stationary house. A pump compartment sensor catches leaks at the source before they travel anywhere else.
Pressure relief valve drips and slowly corroding fittings are among the most common RV water heater failure points. A sensor placed in the drip pan or directly beneath the unit catches this early, before it saturates surrounding insulation.
Supply line connections and P-trap fittings work loose over time, especially with the vibration of driving. Every sink in the rig should have its own sensor — don't assume one kitchen sensor covers a bathroom sink across the rig.
Seal failures here are both messy and easy to miss, since this area isn't checked as often as a visible sink cabinet. A sensor at this connection point catches a failure before it becomes an unpleasant surprise.
This is the entry point for external water pressure, and pressure spikes from an unregulated campground connection can stress fittings here more than anywhere else in the system. A sensor at or near this inlet catches problems introduced from outside the rig, not just internal plumbing failures.

Adhesive mounting alone often isn't enough once you factor in thousands of miles of road vibration. A cable-tie or bracket mount holds up better over time than double-sided tape by itself. Also keep battery access in mind — mount sensors somewhere you can reach for a battery check without disassembling cabinetry, even if that means a slightly less "hidden" placement than you'd prefer.
Tie sensor count to risk zones, not to rig size alone. A single-axle travel trailer might need five sensors to cover its five risk zones properly; a large Class A with two bathrooms and a washer might need eight or nine. Buying more sensors than you have genuine risk zones doesn't add meaningful protection — it just means more batteries to track.
