Home Assistant changes the question from “does this sensor send a notification?” to “what should my house do when it detects water?” That opens up much more useful automation.

Start with the radio you already use

If your Home Assistant setup already has Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Matter working well, I would start there. Adding a random cloud-only sensor just because it is cheap often creates another app, another account, and another failure point.

Home Assistant's current ecosystem includes local integrations for water leak sensors, and its certified-device directory now lists Matter-over-Thread water leak sensors as well as water-monitoring hardware. Browse the current certified device directory.

What Home Assistant can do with a leak sensor

The interesting part is what happens after detection. Home Assistant can send a critical notification, turn on lights, sound an alarm, and — if you have a compatible valve — close the water main. Its current moisture trigger documentation even gives an example automation that closes a smart water valve when a leak sensor detects water. Home Assistant: moisture detected.

Example: basement leak detected → shut off main water → turn basement lights on → send phone alert → repeat alert if the sensor remains wet.

Matter and Thread are interesting — but do not buy the logo

Matter is useful when you want broader platform compatibility, while Thread can provide a low-power mesh connection. But compatibility on the box does not automatically mean your existing Home Assistant network is configured correctly.

Home Assistant's 2026 Matter work has improved the platform's Matter infrastructure, and current certified devices include Matter-over-Thread leak sensors. Read Home Assistant's 2026 Matter update.

What I would look for in a Home Assistant leak sensor

One current example is Heiman's Matter water leak sensor, which Home Assistant lists as a supported local-push device. See the Heiman Home Assistant integration.

A simple automation is better than a complicated one

You do not need a 40-step smart-home routine. Start with something boring: leak detected → close valve → notify phone.

Then add a delay or escalation if you have a reason. Home Assistant supports conditions such as “moisture is detected” and can escalate an alert when a sensor stays wet for a set period. See the moisture condition documentation.

For hardware choices, compare that against our smart-home hub guide and Matter leak-sensor guide.

FAQ

Do I need a hub for Home Assistant leak sensors?

It depends on the radio. Zigbee and Z-Wave sensors generally need their appropriate coordinator/controller; some Matter-over-Wi-Fi devices can connect through Matter infrastructure without a dedicated leak-sensor hub.

Is Matter better than Zigbee for leak sensors?

Not automatically. Both can work well. The better choice is usually the network you already have configured reliably.

Can Home Assistant shut off my water automatically?

Yes, if a compatible controllable valve is integrated. Home Assistant documents a moisture-trigger automation that closes a water main valve after leak detection.
